How to track a walk with your Apple Watch

Record a walk from your Apple Watch, with its time, distance and route. You can leave your iPhone at home.

Start a walk

  1. On your Apple Watch, open Doggy Time.
  2. Tap your pet, then Walk.
  3. Tap Start.
  4. The first time, read the Location Access message and tap Agree. Then allow location and Health access when your watch asks.

While you walk, your watch shows the time and the distance. Your iPhone shows the walk as Recording on Apple Watch when it's nearby.

Pause and finish

  1. Tap Pause.
  2. Tap Resume to carry on, or Finish to end the walk.
  3. Tap Done.

The walk is saved in Doggy Time with its start, end, distance and map. It's also saved to Apple Health as a walking workout.

To throw the walk away, tap Discard while it's paused, then Discard again.

Good to know

  • Your watch uses your iPhone's GPS when your iPhone is with you, and its own GPS when it isn't.
  • Your watch records one walk at a time.
  • If you forget to stop, GPS stops after 6 hours to save your battery. The timer keeps running until you finish it.
  • Other timed activities, like Sleep or Crate, work the same way, without GPS.
  • To log something without a timer, scroll down to Log without timer.
  • You can finish or discard a watch walk from your iPhone too. Pause and resume it on your watch.
  • The Doggy Time watch app is part of Premium.

Troubleshooting

  • "Will sync when your iPhone is nearby": the walk is saved on your watch. It's sent to your iPhone the next time your iPhone is nearby and you open Doggy Time.
  • "Update Doggy Time on your iPhone": install the latest Doggy Time from the App Store on your iPhone.
  • "Allow location for Doggy Time in the Watch app settings to record the route.": open the Watch app on your iPhone, go to Privacy, then Location Services, and allow Doggy Time.
  • "A walk is already recording for ...": finish that walk first.
  • "GPS stopped. The timer is still running.": another workout app took over GPS. The route so far is kept.
