How to Create Custom Rewards in Chore Boss

How to Create Custom Rewards in Chore Boss

Custom rewards allow parents to create point-based incentives that children can earn and redeem. Unlike allowance-based rewards that use real money, custom rewards use a points system where parents define what children can "purchase" with their earned points.

Creating a Custom Reward

Step 1: Access Custom Rewards

  • Navigate to the Rewards section of the app
  • Tap the gift icon at top right.

Step 2: Add a Reward Image (Optional)

  • Tap the camera icon circle at the top of the screen
  • Choose to take a photo or select from your gallery
  • The image will help children easily identify the reward

Step 3: Enter Reward Details

Name (Required)

  • Give your reward a clear, descriptive name
  • Examples: "Extra Screen Time", "Ice Cream Trip", "Choose Movie Night", "Stay Up 30 Minutes Later"

Points Required (Required)

  • Set how many points are needed to redeem this reward
  • Default is 100 points, but you can adjust based on the reward's value
  • Consider the earning rate when setting points (how many points children earn per chore)

Step 4: Configure Reward Settings

Renewable Reward

  • ON: Children can redeem this reward multiple times
  • OFF: This is a one-time reward that disappears after redemption
  • Use renewable for recurring rewards like "Extra Screen Time"
  • Use non-renewable for special one-time treats

Joint Reward

  • ON: Multiple children can pool their points together to redeem this reward
  • OFF: Each child must have enough points individually
  • Great for family rewards like "Pizza Night" or "Trip to the Park"

Step 5: Add Notes (Optional)

  • Include any special conditions or details about the reward
  • Examples:
    • "Valid on weekends only"
    • "Must be redeemed before 8 PM"
    • "Requires parent approval 24 hours in advance"

Step 6: Save the Reward

Tap the Save button to create your custom reward. It will now appear in the rewards list and children can see it as a redemption option.

Tips for Effective Custom Rewards

  1. Balance Point Values: Make rewards achievable but not too easy. Children should work for 3-7 days to earn meaningful rewards.

  2. Mix Reward Types: Combine small daily rewards (50-100 points) with larger weekly/monthly goals (500+ points).

  3. Age-Appropriate Rewards: Younger children prefer immediate, tangible rewards while older kids may save for bigger rewards.

  4. Clear Expectations: Use the notes field to set clear boundaries and conditions for reward redemption.

  5. Regular Updates: Refresh your reward options periodically to maintain engagement and excitement.
